A Page From My Book: 2003 Journal Project

2003 was the second year for an interesting challenge suggested by Karey Bresenhan, Director of the International Quilt Festival, in which the participants submitted nine 8.5" x 11" quilts, each representing some aspect of the month in which it was made. The nine pages were hung in a row for each participant, at the Houston Show, Fall 2003, and Chicago, Spring 2004, as well as in additional venues.

To see more of these great quilts and how they were displayed, visit the 2003 display site on QuiltArt.

My plan was to consolidate 12 journal pages into a larger quilt after the 9 travellers arrived home. Here is a photo of the finished quilt (January 2005). Note that the checkerboard stamping was accomplished very early in the project and often extends from page to page, across the backing fabric. Rather than making 9 or 12 very different quilts, I worked to make small quilts that would be interesting and "tell a stand-alone story", but which also had consistency as a group of "blocks" in a larger piece.
